Flo's Seniors

Empowering Seniors in Ottawa with Compassion

At Flo’s Seniors, we are deeply inspired by our Afro-Caribbean heritage. We are committed to serving Afro-Caribbean seniors with a strong sense of community that embraces every aspect of our identity as Canadians. Our programs and initiatives serve not only urban Ottawa but extend into Gatineau, ensuring that seniors across the region receive the care they deserve. We strive to elevate seniors to the respectful and dignified living standards they are entitled to, while opening doors to endless possibilities for their lives.

What does Flo's Seniors do?

Flo's Seniors supports Afro-Caribbean older adults and their caregivers across Ottawa and Gatineau. Joanne Robinson founded the organisation in 2018 in honour of her parents, Florence and Milton. We provide culturally informed Abbeyfield housing, door-to-door transportation, weekly volunteer phone calls, referrals to trusted local services, and holiday hampers each December.

Care Packages

What services can seniors access?

Door-to-door transportation to medical appointments and shops, weekly check-in calls from volunteers, help finding health, legal and financial services, holiday hampers, and Abbeyfield shared housing. We serve Afro-Caribbean seniors and their caregivers across Ottawa and Gatineau. Call 613-292-3375 and a real person will help you work out what you need.

Community

How does Flo's Seniors reduce isolation?

Our Calling Initiative pairs volunteers with seniors who might otherwise go days without speaking to anyone. We also run community events, Kwanzaa celebrations and wellness afternoons, and Abbeyfield shared housing is built around companionship rather than living alone. Door-to-door transport means nobody misses a gathering because they cannot get there.

Triaging

Who helps seniors find services in Ottawa?

We do. Flo's Seniors keeps trusted connections across health, social, legal and financial services in Ottawa, including Ottawa Public Health, the Champlain Healthline, the Council on Aging of Ottawa, Jaku Konbit and Dubuisson Law Office. If you are unsure where to start, call 613-292-3375 and we will make the introduction.

Tree of Life
Resources

What programmes does Flo's Seniors run?

Five main programmes: Abbeyfield shared housing, door-to-door transportation to appointments and shops, the Calling Initiative of weekly volunteer phone calls, one-to-one guidance and referrals to trusted local services, and holiday hampers each December. All are for Afro-Caribbean seniors and their caregivers living in Ottawa and Gatineau.

Where can seniors find affordable housing in Ottawa?

Abbeyfield Houses are small, affordable shared homes for older adults. Residents keep a private room and share communal living space and meals with a handful of neighbours. There are hundreds worldwide, and Flo's Seniors is developing safe, culturally informed housing on that model here in Ottawa.

Can someone help me navigate senior services?

Yes. We give one-to-one guidance through the health, social, legal and financial services available in Ottawa, and make referrals on your behalf. Caregivers are welcome too, not an afterthought. If you are not sure where to begin, call 613-292-3375 and we will work it out with you.

How do volunteer phone calls work?

Volunteers make regular friendly telephone calls to seniors who might otherwise go days without speaking to anyone. It is a real conversation rather than a welfare check, and it means someone notices early if something is wrong. To arrange calls for yourself or a relative, call 613-292-3375.
